Prophet (sallallâhû alaihi wa-sallam) said: Do not look to those above you. Look to those below you, as it will more likely remind you of Allâh’s favors bestowed on you.” [Sahîh al-Bukharî and Sahîh Muslim]

On another occasion, he said: If one of you looks at someone wealthier and better built than him, he should also look at someone of lower standard than himself.” [Sahîh Muslim]

The Prophet (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said: If this world were worth a mosquito’s wing before Allah, He would not give a disbeliever a drink of water.” [At-Tirmidhee]

The favors of Allah in the world are a test; the more the favors, the more the tests. Al-Hasan al-Basri said: “Umar Ibn Khattab wrote this letter to Abu Musa al-Ash’ari, ‘Be content with your provision in this world, for the Most Merciful has honored some of His servants over others in terms of provision as a test of both. The one who has been given plenty is being tested to see if he will give thanks to Allah and fulfill the duties which are his by virtue of his wealth [Ibn Hatim]

Allah, the Exalted, has therefore forbidden us from desiring what other have, Do not wish for what we have favored some of you over others.” [Soorah an-Nisa (4): 32]

The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) said: Envy is allowed in two cases, in case of a man whom Allah has given the Qur’aan and who recites it throughout night and day; and a man on whom Allah has bestowed wealth who gives it away throughout night and day.” [Saheeh al-Bukharee and Saheeh Muslim] and he (sallallahu alaihi wa-sallam) also explained what may be said: I wish I were given what he was given and did with it what he did.”

[102] Surah At-Takathur (The Piling Up)

أَلْهَاكُمُ التَّكَاثُرُ The mutual rivalry for piling up of worldly things diverts you,
حَتَّىزُرْتُمُ الْمَقَابِرَ Until you visit the graves (i.e. till you die).
كَلَّا سَوْفَ تَعْلَمُونَ Nay! You shall come to know!
ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَوْف َتَعْلَمُونَ Again, Nay! You shall come to know!
كَلَّا لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عِلْمَ الْيَقِينِ Nay! If you knew with a sure knowledge (the end result of piling up, you would not have occupied yourselves in worldly things)
لَتَرَوُن َّالْجَحِيمَ Verily, You shall see the blazing Fire (Hell)!
ثُمَّ لَتَرَوُنَّهَا عَيْنَ الْيَقِينِ And again, you shall see it with certainty of sight!
ثُمَّ لَتُسْأَلُنّ َيَوْمَئِذٍ عَنِ النَّعِيمِ Then, on that Day, you shall be asked about the delight (you indulged in, in this world)!

Allah, the Almighty, says:

{And put forward to them the example of two men: unto one of them We had given two gardens of grapes, and We had surrounded both with date- palms; and had put between them green crops (cultivated fields). Each of those two gardens brought forth its produce, and failed not in the least therein, and We caused a river to gush forth in the midst of them. And he had property (or fruit) and he said to his companion, in the course of mutual talk: “I am more than you in wealth and stronger in respect of men.” And he went into his garden while in a state (of pride and disbelief), unjust to himself. He said: “I think not that this will ever perish. And I think not the Hour will ever come, and if indeed I am brought back to my Lord, (on the Day of Resurrection), I surely shall find better than this when I return to Him.”

His companion said to him during the talk with him: “Do you disbelieve in Him Who created you out of dust (i.e. your father Adam), then out of Nutfah (mixed semen drops of male and female discharge), then fashioned you into a man?” But as for my part, (I believe) that He is Allah, my Lord, and none shall I associate as partner with my Lord. “It was better for you to say, when you entered your garden: ‘That which Allah wills (will come to pass)! There is no power but with Allah! If you see me less than you in wealth, and children. “It may be that my Lord will give me something better than your garden and will send on it Husban (torment, bolt) from the sky, then it will be a slippery earth. “Or the water thereof (of the gardens) becomes deep-sunken (underground) so that you will never be able to seek it.”

So his fruits were encircled (with ruin). And he remained clapping his hands (with sorrow) over what he had spent upon it, while it was all destroyed on its trellises, and he could only say: “Would that I had ascribed no partners to my Lord!” And he had no group of men to help him against Allah, nor could he defend (or save) himself. There (on the Day of Resurrection), Al-Walayah (protection, power, authority and kingdom) will be for Allah (Alone), the True God. He (Allah) is the Best for reward and the Best for the final end. (La ilaha illallah -none has the right to be worshipped but Allah)}. (Al-Kahf, 32-44)
